Malaysia – IUC welcomes Hang Tuah Jaya as new pilot city (GCoM)

The Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (HTJMC) invited the GCoM SEA Secretariat to attend a briefing and discussion session on future collaboration between Hang Tuah Jaya (HTJ) and the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) Southeast Asia Secretariat on 20 January 2020 in Hang Tuah Jaya, Malaysia. The meeting aimed to provide GCoM related information and knowledge to be shared with the HTJ officials attending the meeting.

Chaired by the Council Secretary and attended by HTJMC officials, participants included the IUC technical experts supporting Malaysian cities, Prof. Dr. Ho Chin Siong and Professor Chau Loon Wai – both from the Low Carbon Asia Research Centre at the University Technology Malaysia (UTM). Also, Strategic Maizura Ismail, Capacity Development Manager at UCLG ASPAC,  represented the GCoM Southeast Asia Secretariat/IUC Asia Helpdesk.

Hang Tuah Jaya, the capital city of Malaka state, Malaysia, has already launched its GHG inventory and plans to launch their Climate Action Plan soon. HTJ viewed GCoM as a learning opportunity to further strengthen its commitment to focus on combating climate change adaptation and building resilience. HTJ officials mentioned that the involvement in GCoM will strengthen the city’s effort in setting examples for other cities and becoming a champion in the development of cities’ climate action plans.
